Is ISO IEC 21964 good enough?

The ISO IEC 21964 is a very useful international standard for data carrier destruction. It is a copy of the German DIN norm 66399 from 2012.  The standard contains clear guidelines for the physical destruction of data carriers and for complete destruction processes. It can also be useful for evaluating the performance of shredders when it comes to comparing the size of shred particles of different types of data carriers.

However, rigid application according exactly to the standard may lead to problems in execution.  We will explain to you how these problems arise.

And also, how up to date are the definitions of particle sizes in the context of the incredibly rapid increases in storage density?

What are the other relevant elements of data carrier destruction aside from particle size?
